Probing System
Overview: Renishaw Probing System
1. Purpose & Benefits
Renish1.aw probing systems—employed in both CNC machine tools and coordinate measuring machines (CMMs)—offer automated, precise measurement for workpiece setup, tool calibration, and in-process inspection. This automation:
- Maximizes machining accuracy and repeatability
- Reduces scrap, downtime, and manual labor
- Enables smart, “lights-out” manufacturing workflows
These systems gather essential data before, during, and after machining to enable enhanced process control and productivity gains.
Key Components & Technologies
a) Touch-Trigger Probes
- Standard-accuracy touch probes: Use kinematic mechanisms for reliable 2D measurements.
- High-accuracy probes: Employ strain-gauge sensors for superior accuracy and 3D measurement capability.
b) Scanning Probes (SPRINT™ Technology)
- High-speed, high-density 3D scanning capabilities for detailed surface and feature measurement.
c) RENGAGE™ Technology
- Integrates compact strain-gauge sensors with miniaturized electronics for submicron repeatability.
d) Tool Setting & Broken-Tool Detection
- Non-contact systems like the NC4+ Blue use blue laser technology to accurately set or inspect tool geometries on-machine.
2. Integration & Software Ecosystem
- CNC Controller Integration: Modern CNC controllers typically include built-in routines for probing cycles, simplifying integration.
- Supporting Software: Renishaw offers macro solutions, PC-based tools, and smartphone apps for system setup, cycle optimization, diagnostics, and monitoring.
- Automation & Data Platforms: Tools like “Renishaw Central” support smart manufacturing by collecting, analyzing, and leveraging probing data.
